From what age to read aloud, and which book fits?
Reading aloud pays from the first birthday, and a picture book the child appears in is loveliest between 3 and 8. Here is what a child expects from a book at each age, and which story fits when.
From when reading aloud makes sense
At one a child does not yet understand the story, but understands the situation: someone sits with them, points at pictures and talks calmly. That is the beginning. From about two the child names what it sees; from three it follows a simple plot and wants the same story again and again.
Reading charities have advised for years to start early and read daily, ideally as a fixed habit before sleep. Ten minutes is enough. More important than the age is that reading stays without pressure: no quizzing, no reading on when the child wants to leave.
A personalised children's book is not a teaching book but a reason to sit down: the child wants to see the page they are on.
At 1 to 2: little text, calm pictures
A toddler looks at pictures and listens to your voice; the plot is beside the point. It needs big, clear pictures, little text per page, and things it knows: animals, the bed, the garden.
For this age the three occasion books suit at Amberro: the bedtime book, where the child puts the farm animals to bed, the birthday book with a single candle on the cake, and the book for the big brother or sister when a baby comes. When ordering you choose the age, and the story is told to a toddler in short sentences.
The adventure books with the dragon or outer space are still too long for this age; they come a year or two later. How grandparents give the book is on a gift for your grandchild.
At 3 to 5: the best time
At three a child recognises themselves in the picture for certain, follows a story with a beginning and an end, and asks questions about it. That is the age at which a personalised book works most strongly: the child points at the figure, says their name and wants the page once more.
Now the adventures fit: the little dragon that gets fed and falls asleep on the child's lap, the fire brigade that rescues a kitten, the sea with the big shell. All three are calm enough for the evening and have a plot a four-year-old can retell.
Choose the right age when ordering: for a three-year-old the sentences are shorter than for a five-year-old, with the same pictures. Whole example books you leaf through on the examples page.
At 6 to 8: reading alone, being proud
A school child reads the first pages alone and has the rest read aloud, or the other way round. It wants a story in which something happens, and it is proud to be in a book it can show its friends.
For this age the fuller telling fits, which you choose with the age when ordering: more text per page, a thought of the hero's own, the same pictures. Outer space with the rocket and the star map is the most popular theme with school children; the lantern walk and the dragon keep working.
As a printed hardcover the book becomes a shelf book at this age, still there years later; note that the printed book ships within Germany only. More on first-school-day gifts in A first-school-day gift from grandparents.
Three rules of thumb for choosing
One: when in doubt, choose the younger age. A book that is slightly too easy is still gladly heard; one that is too long is put aside.
Two: the theme by the child, not by the occasion. A child who knows every fire engine wants the fire brigade, at Christmas too.
Three: the eBook first. For €7.99 you see the whole book with all its pictures and read it on the tablet; it arrives by e-mail, usually the same evening. How ordering works is on the home page.
At a glance: which book at which age:
| Age | What the child can do | Which book fits |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Look at pictures, name things, listen to your voice | Goodnight book, birthday book, big-sister-or-brother book |
| 3 to 5 | Recognise themselves, follow a story, ask about it | Dragon, fire station, sea, lantern walk |
| 6 to 8 | Read the first pages alone, retell the story | Outer space, lantern walk, dragon: as a hardcover for the shelf (Germany only) |

The book behind it
A picture book in which your grandchild is the hero, with their name, their face and a dedication from you on the first page. All you need is one photo.
Make a book nowIn short
From what age should you read to children?
From the first birthday, a few minutes daily, without pressure. At one the closeness counts, from two the naming of pictures, from three the story.
For which age is a personalised children's book loveliest?
For 3 to 8. At three the child recognises themselves in the picture for certain, at seven or eight they read the story alone. The occasion books suit from the first birthday.
What changes if I choose a different age when ordering?
The length and the language of the text: short sentences for a toddler, more text and a thought of the figure's own for a school child. The pictures stay the same.
Which story suits a four-year-old?
The adventures: the little dragon, the fire brigade, the sea, the lantern walk. All four are calm enough for the evening and have a plot a four-year-old can retell.
