Amberro: Your child as the hero of their own picture book

Personalised children's book: the guide

A personalised children's book is a picture book the child appears in: with their name, and with some makers also with their face. Here is what exists, what it costs, which age it suits and what to check before you order.

What a personalised children's book is

A personalised children's book is a finished story with one particular child placed into it. In the simplest form only the name is filled in: the hero is called Emma or Oliver, but looks the same in every copy. In the fuller form the child is also drawn, from a photo, so they recognise themselves on every page.

Almost always there is a dedication you write yourself, and sometimes a choice of several stories. The result is a book that exists only once: not printed in a run, but made for each child separately, as a file to read on a tablet or as a printed book.

At Amberro one photo of the face is enough: from it comes a drawn figure that resembles the child and plays the lead in one of eight stories, with their name and your dedication at the front.

By name or by photo: the difference

Books by name only are the older form. The figure is the same for every child; only the name in the text changes. That is cheap and quick, but a four-year-old notices precisely that the child in the book does not look like them.

Books by photo go a step further: from the photo comes a drawn figure with the child's own hair, skin tone and face. The child points at the page and says "that's me". That moment is exactly why grandparents give these books.

Worth knowing: it is a drawing, not a copy of the photo. Small differences are part of it, and no honest maker promises a perfect likeness. Which photo works best is in Which photo for a personalised children's book.

What a personalised children's book costs

Printed personalised children's books from the well-known makers mostly cost between 25 and 40 euros, often plus shipping (as of November 2026, without guarantee; prices change). The range depends on name versus face, the number of pages and whether it is a hardcover.

At Amberro the two are separate: the eBook costs €7.99 incl. VAT and arrives by e-mail, usually the same evening, for buyers anywhere in the EU. You read it on a tablet or phone or print it yourself. The hardcover with the eBook costs €37.98 incl. VAT plus €5.95 shipping and ships within Germany only; outside Germany the eBook is the choice.

The advantage of the separate prices: you see the whole book for €7.99 before you decide whether to have it printed. How to make the book in three steps is on the home page.

Which age a personalised children's book suits

A personalised children's book is loveliest for children from 3 to 8. At three a child recognises themselves in the picture for certain and is delighted; at seven or eight they read the story themselves and are proud to be in it.

For younger children from the first birthday, calm books with little text suit best: the bedtime book or the birthday book. At Amberro you choose the age when ordering, and the story is told to fit: short sentences for a toddler, more for a school child.

The dedication: the most personal part

The dedication sits at the front of the book and is often read more times than the story. Two or three sentences are enough: to whom, from whom, for which occasion, and one sentence that fits only this child. A dedication need not rhyme and need not sound solemn; the best ones sound the way grandma or grandpa really talk.

You enter it when ordering, and it appears on the first page, in the eBook as in the hardcover. Write it down first, read it aloud once, and cut what you would not say.

Thirty examples sorted by occasion, and a few rules for length and tone, are in Book dedication for a child: examples.

What to check before you order

Five questions separate a good offer from a disappointing one:

  • Do you see the book before it is printed? At Amberro yes: the eBook comes first.
  • How many pages does the book really have? Ours have 26 pages with 13 pictures; on the examples page you leaf through whole books.
  • What happens to the photo? It should be used only for the books you order, and for nothing else.
  • When does the book arrive? For an eBook, hours should be enough.
  • Is there a story that fits the child? A child who knows every fire engine does not want a book about the sea.

If one of those answers is missing, ask before you pay.

Which story fits which child

The story should fit the child, not the occasion. A birthday or Christmas is the reason to give; the book itself tells of the dragon, the sea or the fire brigade, and the occasion goes in the dedication.

At Amberro there are eight stories: the lantern walk for the dark months, the sea for beach children, outer space for small explorers, the little dragon for everyone who wants a dragon but no fright yet, the fire brigade without a fire, and the three occasion books: bedtime, birthday and big brother or sister.

Do not ask the child if it is to be a surprise; ask the parents what the child is playing with right now. Nine times out of ten that is the right story. How grandparents give the book is on a gift for your grandchild.

eBook or hardcover: which is worth it when

The eBook is the book for reading aloud on a tablet and for trying it out: for €7.99 you see the finished book with all its pictures, and if the child recognises themselves, the gift has already worked. It also suits when the child lives far away or when it has to be quick.

The hardcover is the book for the shelf and the gift table: hard cover, silk-matt paper, the same pictures and the same story, with the dedication at the front. It ships within Germany only. If you live there, or the child has a German address, have it printed; otherwise print the eBook yourself or read it on the tablet.

Most grandparents outside Germany make the eBook and read it at the next visit. How ordering works is on the home page.

The book behind it

One photo of the face is enough. From it we draw the hero of a 26-page picture book, with your child's name, their face and your dedication.

In short

What is the difference between a children's book by name and one by photo?

In a book by name only the name in the text changes; the figure looks the same for every child. In a book by photo the child is drawn from their photo and recognises themselves on every page.

What does a personalised children's book cost?

Printed, mostly 25 to 40 euros from the well-known makers, plus shipping (as of November 2026). At Amberro the eBook costs €7.99 incl. VAT; the hardcover with eBook €37.98 incl. VAT plus €5.95 shipping, within Germany only.

Can the hardcover be shipped outside Germany?

No, the printed book ships within Germany only. The eBook arrives by e-mail at any address in the EU; you read it on a tablet or print it yourself.

From what age is a personalised children's book worth it?

Especially lovely for 3 to 8, and for younger children from the first birthday the calm occasion books with little text suit well; you choose the age when ordering.

Does the drawn child really look like my grandchild?

It is a drawing from the photo: hair, skin tone and face are carried over. A good photo from the front in daylight makes the biggest difference.
